Men's Final Game

Men's Final Game

In a tense rematch of last year's gold medal game, the Keyano Huskies and NAIT Ooks faced off for the ACAC Men's Soccer Championship on the Hanson Lincoln Field in Grande Prairie. Fans of both teams packed the stands, eager to see which powerhouse would prevail after their thrilling showdown in 2023.

NAIT started strong, pressing with a 15th-minute corner kick that allowed midfielder Hossie Kifle a chance on goal, but his header missed the mark. Later, a blocked clear attempt by Keyano's defense led to another opportunity for Kifle from 10 yards out, but Huskies' keeper Corbin Cyprien made a crucial save to keep the game level. Keyano had their own chances, including a 30-yard attempt from Ben Odd that sailed just over the crossbar, and a 44th-minute corner kick that struck the post. In the final moments of the first half, NAIT's Jameson Kiezik missed a close-range opportunity, leaving the game scoreless at halftime.

The second half saw both teams intensifying their attack, with Keyano's captain Jacob Marshall heading a well-placed free kick on target in the 51st minute, only for NAIT's keeper, Ethan Hrushka, to secure the save. In the 60th minute, NAIT's Dejuan Cassie fired a 25-yard free kick, testing Cyprien again, who continued to be a defensive wall for the Huskies. Despite the aggressive pace and high stakes, both sides struggled to break the deadlock, with limited shots on goal and strong defensive showings on both ends. As the clock wound down on regulation, the match remained scoreless, pushing the game into overtime and evoking memories of last year's intense finish.

Overtime brought fresh drama and decisive moments as NAIT finally broke through just two minutes in, with forward Jameson Kiezik netting an unassisted goal in the 92nd minute to put the Ooks ahead. Keyano scrambled to respond but struggled to regain control, and NAIT's Meron Werede doubled the lead in the 107th minute, sealing their victory. The Ooks maintained their lead to the final whistle, claiming the gold with a 2-0 win. Keyano's captain Jacob Marshall was named Player of the Game, while NAIT's Jackson Csobot earned the honor for his team.

NAIT's Peter Jones and Jameson Kiezik, along with Keyano's Mykyta Kudrin and Aaron Ernst, were named tournament all-stars, and NAIT's Jamil Alhassan took home the MVP award for his dominant midfield play, closing a hard-fought championship with a well-earned victory.
