WVB | Kodiaks break losing streak at home

January 31, 2019- The Lethbridge College Kodiaks were back in their natural habitat hosting Make Some Noise for Mental Health night and looking to snap a six game losing streak as they took on the ACAC South third place Ambrose Lions.

While the Lions paved the way through the first set, the Kodiaks kept close on their trail, always applying pressure. Kodiaks setter Jamie Brown proved to be a dominant force on the court not only offensively but defensively with 7 digs, second only to the teams libero Carmen Nadeau. While Brown managed to keep the game tight, the Lions ultimately overcame the Kodiaks in a battle to the end for a score of 27-25.

The Kodiaks were prepared heading into the second set. Left side Mack Lewicki found the court on series of powerful kills, aiding the Kodiaks to lead the way through the set. The Lions made a last-ditch attempt to regain control but were unable to overcome the Kodiaks, who took the second set 25-18 to tie up the game 1-1.

The third set was a nearly point-for-point battle as Lions Willow Lewington had an impressive offensive and defensive outing. The battle continued into extra points for the second time in the match. A shot to the head took Brown out of the game, looking like it would end the Kodiaks streak but Brown returned two points later to regain her place on the court. The Kodiaks competitiveness at the net ultimately gave them the upper hand to take the set 30-28 and gave them a 2-1 lead in the game.

The Lions brought some intensity heading into the fourth set as they looked to stay alive in the game. The Kodiaks proved to be ready for the Lions new found energy, continuing the point-for-point trend in the match. Ultimately the Kodiaks claimed the set 25-23 with a double block from Laura Serafini and Sianna Cherweniuk to claim the match 3-1.

With this win the Kodiaks successfully break their losing streak and advance their record to 3-16 in the season, while the Lions fall to 13-8. Both teams will be back in action on Saturday for a rematch in Calgary.
