WVB | Kodiaks get back in win column

WVB | Kodiaks get back in win column

Nov. 24, 2018 - It feels good to get back in the win column.

The Kodiaks bounced back from a tough Friday night loss and looked like a completely different team on Saturday afternoon, downing the Olds College Broncos in convincing straight sets fashion (25-16, 25-12, 25-14).

With the win, the Kodiaks (2-10) broke a ten game losing streak.

The Broncos were riding high after winning their first game of the season the previous night, but this time it was the Kodiaks who played a more complete game. With their entire team engaged and displaying high intensity, the Kodiaks used great serving and power hitting to throw the Broncos off their game.

After winning the first set 25-16, the Kodiaks continued to apply the pressure. Power serves didn't allow Olds to get comfortable on offense, which in turn helped the Kodiaks deliver strong counter attacks. Lethbridge pulled away mid-way through the set with a big run and eventually won the stanza 25-12.

The third set was controlled by the Kodiaks veterans, including middle hitter Laura Serafini who punctuated a mid-set rally with an incredible spike. Much to the delight of a sizable crowd at the Val Matteotti Gym, the Kodiaks wrapped up the match with a 25-14 third set win.

The Kodiaks had a balanced offensive attack throughout the match, with four players delivering six or more kills. Carley Doneff led the team with eight, while Sianna Cherweniuk, Mackenzie Lewicki and Laura Serafini each had six.

Lewicki also had nine digs for the victors.

Karley Dieken led the Broncos with five kills while Avery Gammel had 12 assists.
