NAIT Ooks defeat Medicine Hat to advance to gold medal match

Lloydminster, AB - The first game of championship Sunday at the ACAC Futsal Championships featured the NAIT Ooks and the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. The teams faced each other earlier in the tournament, with NAIT besting the Rattlers 3-1. The stakes were high for this semi-final, with a berth in the ACAC Championship game on the line.

The game began back and forth, with both teams showing tenacity to start the first half. North Player (and Rookie) of the Year Jyla Micael for the Ooks opened the scoring up at 17:50 with dazzling footwork to overcome the Rattlers' defence. Micael continued to lead the offensive charge for the Ooks throughout the half, but the Rattlers' defence, led by 3rd year Kadence Dulle-Goller, was instrumental in keeping the game close. Shot attempts from the Rattlers gave them many opportunities to equalize the game, but efforts from the Ooks' goalkeeper Carly Speelman, allowed NAIT to enter halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Medicine Hat entered the second half with continued offensive efforts, combatted by tenacious defence by NAIT. Both teams upped the intensity, with a spot in the ACAC final on the line. The Ooks had many chances to extend their lead but were unable to capitalize. In the dying seconds of the game, Alivia Rybchinski of the Rattlers had a great shot to tie the game but was unable to score. The Ooks won the first semi-final of the day 1-0.

Players of the Game were Carly Speelman for the NAIT Ooks and Alexis Ratke for the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
