Thompson posts 21 save shutout for Rustlers third victory of the season.
The Lakeland College Apex Automation Rustlers and Olds College Broncos kicked off a two game series at the Russ Robertson Arena on Friday October 18th. The Rustlers were looking for win three on the year while the Broncos were looking for their first win of the season. The Rustlers would win 4-0 to take the first game of the weekend.
It was a slow first period for both teams as Cienna Kinghorn and Shaye Thompson were not tested thoroughly in the opening frame. Midway through the first period, Robertson would take a cross crease feed from Hailey Carothers to open the scoring. Secondary assist would be given to Addison Eurich and the Rustlers would lead 1-0 at the 9:52 Both teams would have one power play advantage that neither team would capitalize on. The Rustlers outshot Olds 8-4 in period one.
The second period saw a faster and quicker Rustlers team as they took the play to Olds, drawing two minor penalties and gaining momentum from power play chances. Olds would have an early man advantage but the Rustlers penalty kill unit killed things off successfully. The Rustlers would pop three goals in the last four minutes of the period to blow the game wide open. Ella Wingert took a wrist shot from the top of the slot and beat Kinghorn up top to double the lead. Assists would go to Marleigh Mann and Sydney Grover with the goal coming at 3:44. Exactly one minute later, Janay Williams would win a draw to Brooklyn Salewski. Salewski let a shot go from the point and Paris Appel cashed in on a rebound to increase the lead to 3-0. Exactly 0:59 seconds later, Hailey Carothers would finish off the scoring for the period and the game, increasing the lead to 4-0. Darby Robertson and Marleigh Mann would draw assists on the play. The Rustlers would outshoot Olds 18-9 in the period.
The third period was a back and forth affair with Lakeland outshooting Olds 9-8 and 35-21 overall for the game. The Rustlers went 0-1 on the PP in the third period and 0-4 overall in the game while Olds had a late two man advantage, but were unsuccessful on their advantage. Players of the game were Sydney Grover for Lakeland and Cienna Kinghorn for Olds.. Both teams will square off at the Russ Robertson Arena for game 2 of the weekend. Puck drop is 2:00pm.
