Petrie buries late winner to lead Rustlers to opening victory
The Lakeland College Apex Automation Rustlers and Red Deer Polytechnic Queens squared off in the opening game for the Rustlers to kick off the 2024-2025 while the Queens were looking to extend their record 2-0 on the season. Starting goalies were Tora Ward for the Queens and Shaye Thompson for the Rustlers. The Rustlers skated to a 3-2 victory on Friday evening.
The Rustlers opened the scoring on a goal from Hailey Carothers. Carothers scored from the top slot to beat Ward above the shoulder to give the Rustlers an early lead four minutes into the first. The Queens would tie things late in the first. Kaedence Mollin scored on a point shot to beat a screen Thompson to tie things at 1-1. Mollin's goal was a power play goal that came with eighteen seconds left in period one. Shots on goal were 19-4 for Lakeland.
Period two was a physical affair as both teams took penalties throughout the twenty minutes. An end to end rush from Brooklyn Salewski gave the Rustlers the lead again. Salewski picked up the puck behind her net and let go a shot just inside the circle. The puck took a bounce off a Queens defender stick and beat Ward to give Lakeland a 2-1 lead. Shots on goal were 6-5 for Lakeland.
The third period saw the Rustlers get into penalty trouble and the Queens made them pay, cashing in on their third advantage of the period. Kaedence Mollin finished off a minor penalty assessed to her, took a stretch pass from Rylee Mepham and beat Shaye Thompson high side to tie things at 2-2. The teams looked headed to overtime but veteran forward Asha Petrie broke the tie with nineteen seconds left in the third period. Petrie beat Ward with a high shot to give the Rustlers a 3-2 lead. The Queens would outshoot Lakeland 14-11 for the third period, Lakeland would hold a 36-23 advantage overall in the game.
Players of the game were 11 Kaedence Mollin and 15 Asha Petrie for the Queens and Rustlers. The two teams will square off in Red Deer on Saturday October 12th. Puck drop is 5pm.
