OLDS, Alta. - The Red Deer College Queens did the majority of their damage in the second period, taking down the Olds College Broncos 5-1 at the Town of Olds Sports Complex on Thursday.

Victoria Johnston had a goal and an assist, while Mairead Bast and Jenessa Fournier each had a pair of assists for Red Deer College (5-5-1).

Kaely McMurtry, Jordyn Burgar, Kirsten Baumgardt, and Jessi-Lynn Sumaling also scored for the Queens, while Karlee Fetch made 15 saves for the win.

Megan Quesnel had the lone marker for the Broncos (3-7-1), while Lexi Bruce was busy in the Olds College goal, making 34 saves.

The Queens came out flying early in the first, constantly applying pressure in the offensive zone, though Bruce kept the game scoreless. Olds College took the lead just past the halfway point of the first, as Jordan Pettman chipped the puck over to Quesnel, who beat the defender, then beat Fetch high on the glove side to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes.

Red Deer's persistence was rewarded with a four-goal second period, with all four markers coming in a 6:52 span.

McMurtry drew the Queens even on the powerplay at 5:58, redirecting a Johnston point shot past Bruce to make it 1-1. Red Deer took the lead just over a minute later, this time with Burgar redirecting a Fournier shot past Bruce.

Red Deer extended its advantage just over three minutes later, as Sumaling picked up a stretch pass from Bast, then beat Bruce high while falling to her knees to make it 3-1 Queens.

Baumgardt completed the second-period onslaught less than two minutes later, picking the corner on a screened Bruce to give the Queens a 4-1 lead through 40 minutes.

Johnston rounded out the scoring early in the third, scoring the Queens' second powerplay goal of the game off a cross-ice feed from Burgar, who was named player of the game for Red Deer College.

Hanna Wadlegger earned player of the game honours for the Broncos.

The Queens and Broncos will complete the first half of the ACAC regular season at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on Saturday at 7 p.m.
