Broncos advance in ACAC play-in playoff picture

The Olds College Broncos stayed alive in the ACAC women's basketball playoff picture, knocking off the SAIT Trojans 76-54 on Thursday to earn the right to contest the final ACAC South berth for the upcoming ACAC Women's Basketball Championship.

Blu Rose took over in the second half, finishing with 22 points to go with 17 rebounds to earn player of the game honours for the Broncos, while Meghan Swartz turned in her best game of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Rio Yamazaki also did plenty of damage for the Broncos, finishing with 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

For the Trojans, Brook Baker matched Rose's game-high of 22 points to go along with 11 rebounds, while Kyler Varga added 14 points and player of the game Essie Pryor contributed eight points and six rebounds off the bench.

Olds College jumped out from the opening tip, building up an early 14-3 lead to force the Trojans into a timeout, with the Broncos ending the opening quarter up 20-10.

The second quarter saw the Trojans claw back late, piecing together a 10-0 run to cut the Broncos' lead to 33-28 at halftime.

The third quarter was relatively even, with the Broncos pushing out a 52-43 lead heading to the fourth, where Olds College would put the game out of reach.

From here, the Broncos will take the bus to Saskatchewan to face the Briercrest College Clippers on Saturday at 5 p.m. MST, with the winner grabbing the final ticket to Lethbridge to battle for the ACAC championship next week.
