ACAC Grand Prix #1

EDMONTON, AB – On Saturday afternoon the ACAC Indoor Track season kicked off as the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder hosted ACAC Grand Prix #1 at the Kinsmen Sports Centre.

The day started off with the 300 metre event. On the women's side Halle Reid from the RDP Queens crossed the finish line first with a time of 45.56s. Behind her was Thunders Emma Derbyshire (46.56) and Rattlers Cheldynn Molnar (47.02). In the men's event it was a 1-2 finish for the RDP Kings as Axsivier Lawrence led the pack with a time of 38.82s followed by Kevin Edmondson (39.45s) and Gunnarr Gibb (40.07) of the Kodiaks.

The women's 3000 metre event saw an excellent performance by Taylor Chamberlin of Concordia as she posted a time of 11:51.25 to take 1st place. Maria Fox (12:04.08) and Sydney Zissos (12:07.50) of Saint Mary's would capture 2nd and 3rd place. In the men's event, Brandon Toal (9:12.03) and Leonard Chesoo (9:13.00) of the Thunder were the first to cross the finish line followed by Ethan Duret (9:28.93) of Red Deer Polytechnic.

Jasmin Salmon of SAIT had an excellent run in the 1000 metre finals event where she posted a time of 3:37.42 to capture 1st place. Thunders Morgan Spruyt would claim 2nd spot followed by Caitlin Debree (3:42.82) of the Vikings. On the men's side, Nathanael Tabert of the Vikings would stand on top of the podium finishing with a time of 2:53.47. Brannon Sumner (MHC) and Logan Danyluk (LC) followed closely behind to take 2nd and 3rd.

The fast paced women's 600 metre event saw Jasmin Salmon of SAIT cross the finish line first posting a great time of 1:47.22. Emma Derbyshire (CUE) would cross the finish line with a time of 1:52.43 for second 2nd followed by Kammy Park (1:54.85) of RDP. The men's event went right down to the wire as Axsivier Lawrence (RDP) posted a time of 1:31.15 for first place just ahead of Brannon Sumner (MHC) who would cross at 1:31.55. Sam Nawrot (UAA) would capture third place in the event.

Taylor Chamberlain dominated the women's 1500 metre event setting the pace for most of the race and would finish with a time of 5:22.76 for the top spot. Chloe Funnell (UAA) and Maria Boix-Frias (LC) would take 2nd and 3rd place. The 2021 CCAA Cross Country champion, Leonard Chesoo, set the pace for the men's 1500 metre event and would finish in 1st place with a time of 4:16.68, followed closely by teammate Brandon Toal (4:17.14). Keiran Marchand (SAIT) would take the 3rd spot finishing with a time of 4:23.67.

The day would conclude with the ever exciting team relay events. In the women's 4x200m event, Red Deer would stand on top of the podium with a time of 1:59.11. The Kodiaks (2.05.20) would finish in 2nd place followed by the Thunder (2:06.90). The men's event saw the exact same order, the RDP Kings would take 1st place posting a time of 1:41.50, not far ahead of the Kodiaks (1:44.62) and the Thunder (1:45.54).

The Concordia Thunder came through to take a very close and exciting women's 4x400 relay event running with a time of 4:43.62. The RDP Queens (4:44.49) and Lethbridge Kodiaks (4:45.29) would follow just behind. The men's 4x400 relay event was also extremely close as the Thunder (3:47.38) were neck and neck with the Kodiaks (3:47.65) however Concordia would take the event with a strong finish by Chesoo. The Vikings would capture 3rd place by posting a time of 3:54.60.

After ACAC Grand Prix #1, the Red Deer Kings lead the men's team standings with 62 points followed by the Thunder with 57 points and the Kodiaks with 49 points. The Concordia Thunder lead the women's team standings with 60 points followed by the RDP Queens (48) and STMU Lightning (37).The next Grand Prix will be held on Saturday February 19th hosted by Red Deer Polytechnic.
