Another Three Set Loss to Kings For Lions

Hosting the CCAA #1 RDC Kings, the Ambrose Men's Volleyball squad was hoping to pull out a win despite starting an unorthodox lineup due to untimely injuries. The Kings had a few injuries of their own to deal with, so both teams would struggle through the early points of the game with relatively inexperienced lineups.

When asked after the game, Ambrose P.O.G. Jared VanderZwaag said he saw the night as a positive experience overall: "I think we played well…Red Deer's a tough opponent and probably always will be, but we had some injuries on our team and I think we coped well."

The first set found the Lions clawing their way back after being down 17-11; an unusual amount of service errors from Red Deer helped keep the Lions close while VanderZwaag and his team tried to find their groove. A ferocious put-back block by Captain Nolan Ens brought his team within one and made it 22-23, but the Kings' ability to side-out consistently would give them the win in a close first set at 25-23.

The next two sets saw the Lions committing too many hitting errors to come close to evening the score, as well as the Kings settling into a side-out rhythm that was very hard for the undersized Ambrose block to stop. The second set ended with the Lions at a nine point deficit, 25-16, and the third didn't look any better. Despite VanderZwaag and Ens finally establishing a solid connection, as well as some of the most outstanding defensive play ever witnessed in the Lions' Den (courtesy of Josh Rice and Adrian Strandberg), the Kings would win the set 25-12 and the game in three straight sets.

Head Coach Paul Armbruster thinks of every loss as a learning experience, tonight's contest being no different. "This is all a learning and growing experience for most of these young guys, and it takes these experiences of growth to learn and get better, and sometimes you gotta have games like these." The Lions (2-13) will play the Kings (13-2) again tomorrow night at RDC at 8 pm. Catch all the action live on acactv.ca if you can't make the scenic drive to Red Deer. Go Lions!
