Thunder storm in Lac La Biche

LAC LA BICHE – The sky was mostly clear but there was definitely a Thunder storm on the Bold Center soccer field Friday night. The visiting Concordia Thunder rolled into town and stormed off with a 7-1 victory over the Portage College Voyageurs. Pawel Pilat netted three goals and was named Player of the Game for his squad while the Voyageurs' lone goal scorer Bjorn Goolie took home similar honours for his team.

While the score didn't flatter the home side, Voyageurs Head Coach Kika Mukuninwa noted that a combination of early-season injuries and some bad luck worked against the Voyageurs. He views the first game of the season as something to build upon.

"It was a good home opener," he said. "We were missing some guys so we had no subs. We had one guy on the bench who was just there for moral support but definitely with the guys, it was good to see them work without any rest and hopefully as we continue the hard work will pay off."

As they prepare for back-to-back games next weekend, first in Edmonton against The King's University and then at home next Sunday versus Lakeland College, Mukuninwa knows what his troops have to work on in order to get a better result – finishing around the net.

"We hit a couple of posts, a crossbar, and in order to win we have to start putting the ball in the net," he said. "But definitely the work ethic was there so that's something to build on."
