Kings win Close match over Host Rattlers
A blustery day in Medicine Hat blew the Red Deer Kings in to face off with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. The play was balanced in the early going with neither team able to gain momentum early. The Kings were able to produce a good coring chance at 10 minutes turned aside and over the bar from the Rattler keeper. Coming back down the pitch, the Rattlers narrowly slid the ball outside the post on a chance of their own. The back and forth battle continued with both teams getting chances off set pieces but nobody was able to convert. At the 30 minute mark the Rattlers set a through ball and narrowly missed the far side of the post on a great chance to break the scoreless deadlock. The Kings had a chance of their own in the 35th minute just narrowly missing a header, one again turned aside from Rattler Ross Wilder. The Kings finally broke the tie in the 38th minute with a scramble in front of the goal finished off to put the visitors up 1-0. With little left in the half the Kings held on to their lead going into the half.
The home side were set to kick off for the second half working west to east and severely downwind. With this help, the Rattlers were able to control the majority of the play and come up with better chances early. Red Deer was able to come up with a few darting runs down the field to keep the Rattlers from gaining all the momentum. The pendulum of momentum started to once again shift in favor of the Kings with the Rattlers seemingly trapped in their own end for a few minutes. The Ratters quickly reversed field with no damage and earned a free kick just outside the box. Unable to convert, the Rattlers were unable to capitalize on a glorious opportunity. As the time continued to tick, both teams saw their efforts turned aside from the opposing D with neither team generating a ton of chances. Both teams were pressing hard at the end, but ultimately the game was decided by a single goal with the Kings winning 1-0.
