Broncos drop tight matchup with SAIT in season opener

CALGARY (September 9) - The SAIT Trojans picked up right where they left off after their second place finish from last year's Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference (ACAC) Championship, taking down the Olds College Broncos 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.

William Akio was a standout performer for the home team, notching the game winner midway through the second half. Meanwhile, third year athlete Mario Fabian Gromenida played an excellent game for the Broncos, picking up a goal of his own.

After SAIT jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, Mario Fabian Gromenida made a tremendously athletic individual play for Olds moments later to tie the game right back up. Chasing a ball down, Gromenida made his way around the challenging keeper, turned around and fired his first marker of the year past a duo of Trojan defenders in front of the net.

Gromenida had a great chance to add his second of the game early in the second half. Again chasing down a passed ball, Gromenida found himself alone against the keeper. In a little bit too tight, the keeper was able to turn the strike away, keeping the game tied at one.

William Akio scored a beautiful goal midway through the half to give the home team the lead. Taking a pass at the side of the box, Akio smoothly and calmly walked the ball to the center before sending a rocket into the corner of the net for his first goal of the season.

Connor Stevens would add the insurance marker late in the game as the Trojans walked away with a hard fought 3-1 win.

Landon Murphy received the player of the game nod for the Broncos while Nick Moore received the honours for the Trojans.

The Broncos will have a chance to even their record next weekend when they visit Red Deer, meanwhile SAIT will look to continue their strong play with a visit to Lakeland College. Both games are set to begin at 2 P.M.
