Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference "To be Canada's premiere collegiate athletic conference by developing and inspiring leadership through excellence in academics, sport and citizenship"

March 7th, 2025

The Briercrest Clippers faced off against the Concordia Thunder in the opening game of the best of three semifinals in the ACAC playoffs with the chance to exorcise playoff ghosts from a year ago, as these same Thunder upset the Clippers in last year's semis.
Concordia, once again playing with house money after knocking off NAIT in the first round, came out playing with confidence and determination- outshooting Briercrest early and taking the edge off the roar of the crowd with a goal from Dallon Wilton. Fans were treated to frenetic end-to-end action as the teams battled to a 2-2 deadlock as the first period drew to a close.
The middle frame was all Clippers as they silenced the Thunder with their lethal powerplay. After Briercrest took a 3-2 lead, some hard work by Daxton Budd drew a penalty and Jacob Arsenault tallied his second goal of the game to double the lead. His brother Austin then broke things wide open with another goal on the man-advantage before Lucas Lapalm buried a buzzer-beating dagger to chase Concordia's starting goalie and help the Clippers skate into the second intermission with a 6-2 lead.
While Concordia's player of the game, Isaac Leik, made things a bit more respectable in the third period, Briercrest put an exclamation mark on the evening with a pair of goals as well as some crushing hits by Josh Morton and Brandon Kelly to close out an 8-4 victory and push the Thunder to the brink of elimination.
Briercrest's player of the game honours went to Austin Arsenault, who commented on what his family might say to him after multi-goal performances by both he and his brother: "My dad will be a happy man, but he'll know we still have work to do... it's not over yet."
Catch game two of the series 7:00 Saturday evening at the Barkman arena.
