Curling Championship Day 1 Recap

Curling Championship Day 1 Recap

Vermilion, AB - March 3, 2023 - Day 1 was a great start to the ACAC Curling championships hosted by Lakeland College at the Vermilion Curling club.  The first draw saw most of the teams figuring out the ice but as the ends moved on the teams started to hit their shots which made for some exciting curling.

On the men's side Concordia, SAIT, NAIT, and the University of Alberta Augustana were competing for ACAC hardware.  After the first couple of draws all four teams finished the day with a 1 – 1 record.  Even though the scores appeared far apart, a shot here and there made the difference in many games.

On the women's side SAIT, Red Deer Polytechnic, Concordia, and the University of Alberta Augustana were set to battle over the weekend to find out who would be crowned the ACAC Champion on Sunday.  After the first couple of draws, Concordia led the pack with a 2 -0 record followed by Augustana and Red Deer with a win each then SAIT

In the mixed division Red Deer Polytechnic, NAIT, Lakeland, and Portage were battling it out for ACAC supremacy.   Lakeland let the pack after day 1 with two wins followed by Portage and NAIT with a win each and Red Deer who lost a couple of close games.

The opening ceremonies were a highlight with the teams being piped onto the ice and celebrating all the significant parts of curling.
