Rookie of the Year: Ash Hennenfent
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Ash Hennenfent of the Portage College Voyageurs has been selected as the 2022-23 ACAC Curling Rookie of the Year.
Ash Hennenfent, the team's skip, has not only proven themselves to be an excellent athlete on the ice but also an inspiring leader off it. Ash is in their first season at Portage College and is the skip of the mixed curling team. They are from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and is currently enrolled in the University Transfer program.
Despite being a relatively new curler, Ash's coach quickly saw their potential and encouraged them to take on the skip position for the team. Although hesitant at first, Ash quickly proved that they had what it takes to lead the team to success. Throughout the season, they made crucial shots and drew upon their natural ability to score extra points and save the team from potential losses. But Ash's impact went beyond their technical skills on the ice. They embraced their role as team captain, ensuring that the team was always organized and motivated to perform their best.
Off the ice, Ash is equally impressive. They volunteer in the Lac la Biche community, showing their commitment to giving back and making a difference. They also participate in soccer-futsal for the Voyageurs, highlighting their versatility as an athlete.
Reflecting on the season, Coach Kyle Leach shared, "It's been a pleasure coaching Ash this season and seeing them develop into the athlete and leader they have become." Their teammates undoubtedly share this sentiment and are proud to have them represent the Voyageurs as Rookie of the Year.
As Ash looks towards their future, it's clear that they have a bright one ahead. Their skills and leadership abilities will undoubtedly take them far, both on and off the ice. In the words of their coach, "I wish them all the best in their future and hope to see them back as a Voyageur in the 23-24 season."
