2025 ACAC Badminton Rookies of The Year

FEMALE BADMINTON ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, MELISSA ROQUE:
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Melissa Roque of The King’s University has been selected as the 2025 ACAC Female Rookie of the Year.
Melissa Roque made an unforgettable entrance into the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), going undefeated in her rookie season. She dominated the Women’s Singles category, securing victories at SAIT, King’s, and NAIT. Her success extended to Mixed Doubles, where she also went unbeaten at the same events, showcasing her versatility and skill across multiple categories.
Melissa’s on-court IQ is as impressive as her academic achievements, reflecting her intelligence both as a player and as a student. A first-year Bachelor of Science student at The King’s University in Edmonton, she excels in her studies while maintaining her dominance in badminton. Her ability to anticipate plays, execute precise shots, and adapt to different opponents makes her a formidable competitor.
Her leadership qualities and hard work have not gone unnoticed, as she was named co-captain of the Eagles team in her very first year. Beyond her athletic prowess, Melissa is known for her likable personality, making her a valuable teammate and leader.
With an undefeated season already under her belt, the future looks incredibly promising for Melissa Roque. Fans and teammates alike are excited to see what more she will accomplish at Nationals and future seasons to come.
This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2024-25 ACAC Badminton Championship hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton.
MALE BADMINTON ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, HOSSEIN AHMADI:
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Hossein Ahmadi of The King’s University has been selected as the 2025 ACAC Male Rookie of the Year.
Hossein Ahmadi had an exceptional debut season in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), proving himself as one of the top badminton players in the league. He dominated the prestigious Men’s Singles event, securing two first places at SAIT, King’s and finishing as the runner-up at NAIT. His success extended to Men’s Doubles, where he and his brother, Mahdi Ahmadi, claimed two 1st place finishes at King’s and NAIT as well as finishing as runners-up at SAIT.
Hossein’s remarkable year is a testament to his relentless training, strategic court intelligence, and explosive attacking play. His ability to read the game and execute fast, decisive shots has set him apart as a formidable competitor. Beyond his individual accomplishments, he is also a valued teammate, inspiring those around him with his dedication and work ethic.
A first-year Bachelor of Commerce student originally from Iran, Hossein brings international experience to his game. He previously trained with the Iran national team and has also made an impact off the court as a coach in Edmonton at the Derrick Golf & Winter Club, where he helps develop the next generation of badminton talent.
With such a stellar start to his ACAC career, the future looks incredibly bright for Hossein Ahmadi. His journey is just beginning!
