2025 ACAC Badminton Players of The Year

FEMALE BADMINTON PLAYER OF THE YEAR, MELISSA ROQUE:
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Melissa Roque of The King’s University has been selected as the 2025 ACAC Female Player of the Year.
Melissa Roque, a first-year Bachelor of Science student at The King’s University, is making waves both academically and athletically. Known for her strong work ethic and outstanding character, she is a beloved member of her team and a formidable force on the court.
Roque has proudly represented Canada on the international stage, securing a bronze medal in mixed doubles at the Pan American Championships and competing at the 2024 World Junior Championships. Domestically, she dominated the Canadian junior circuit, capturing multiple titles throughout her career.
Making an impressive debut in the ACAC, Roque went undefeated in the regular season, clinching singles and mixed doubles titles at SAIT, King’s, and NAIT. Her playing style is both fierce and elegant, demonstrating sharp tactical awareness and an ability to execute winning shots at crucial moments.
Beyond the court, Roque excels academically, maintaining a high GPA that reflects her intelligence and dedication. She is also passionate about growing the sport, serving as a coach at B-Active Badminton Club, where she mentors young athletes and helps develop the next generation of Canadian badminton players.
With her talent, determination, and leadership, Melissa Roque is undoubtedly a rising star , poised for even greater achievements in the years to come.
This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2024-25 ACAC Badminton Championship hosted by Concordia University of Edmonton.
MALE BADMINTON PLAYER OF THE YEAR, AHMADI MAHDI:
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Mahdi Ahmadi of The King’s University has been selected as the 2025 ACAC Male Player of the Year.
Mahdi Ahmadi, a second-year Bachelor of Commerce student at The King’s University, continues to solidify his legacy as one of the top collegiate badminton players in Canada. As a two-time ACAC Badminton Player of the Year, Ahmadi has consistently showcased his elite skill set on the court.
After securing the national title in mixed doubles in 2024, Ahmadi is now preparing to defend his title once again—this time on home court. His impressive season saw him go undefeated in mixed doubles while also securing two first-place finishes and a runner-up spot in men’s doubles. His composed and strategic play ensures he remains in control of the match, even when facing adversity, always finding a way to stage a comeback and secure the win.
Beyond his personal achievements, Ahmadi is a natural leader. As team captain, he takes on the responsibility of organizing and motivating his teammates, ensuring they train at the highest level. His years of experience and dedication to the sport make him an invaluable mentor both on and off the court.
In addition to competing, Ahmadi is committed to growing the game of badminton in Canada. He serves as a coach at the Derrick Club in Edmonton, where he works to develop young talent and inspire the next generation of athletes.
With his leadership, skill, and unwavering determination, Mahdi Ahmadi is not only a champion on the court but is also a driving force in the sport’s future.
