Clippers Go the Distance to Defeat Lethbridge

By Jeff Misener

The Briercrest Clippers (8-4) and Lethbridge Kodiaks (2-10) hit the floor in Caronport, SK, to complete their weekend series in ACAC women's volleyball. Brimming with passion after Friday's win, the Clippers defended their home court with a hard-fought 25-15, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 15-9 victory.

Clippers' veteran Julia Beer established the early tone with a run of aces, and Faith Buhler chipped in with potent hitting from the right side. Briercrest middle Rachel Stead controlled the net with authority. Lethbridge setter Taryn Bach briefly rallied her team, but the Clippers' hitters were relentlessly efficient in their attack.

With Clipper setter Abby Ulrich opening set two on serve, the hosts galloped to a large advantage. The Kodiaks carved into the deficit on the strength of Hadlee Fleischhauer's serve and hearty team blocking, but Ulrich and Buhler steadied the Clippers' offense along with timely input from Brooklyn Buhler. Faith Buhler and Stead slammed the door on attacks from the left side and Beer put the finishing touches on the set.

Lethbridge bolted ahead in the third frame on Bach's serve, but their joy was short-lived due to the commanding presence of Stead in the middle. Shane Fowlie pushed Lethbridge into the lead on serve but Stead's offensive efforts stalled the Kodiaks' momentum. Several critical attacks from Fleischbauer and Fowlie secured the set for the visitors.

Lethbridge continued with energetic play in the fourth set, but Beer and Stead refused to let the match slip away. Kodiaks' Kourtney Serfas and Faith Buhler traded bombs on the right side. An ace from Eryka Woods stabilized Lethbridge's tenuous advantage. Heroic efforts from Stead at the net could not prevent Lethbridge from knotting the match.

Fowlie and Beer coolly embraced the pressure of the final set, as did Serfas and Stead, but it was Beer's inspiring play and stellar leadership that sealed the deal.

Player of the Game for the feisty Lethbridge Kodiaks was setter Taryn Bach, whose 23 assists, 10 digs and three kills lead her squad. Briercrest's Rachel Stead featured prominently for the hosts with 12 kills.
