The Queens quiet the Thunder in a match that featured multiple long rallies

Red Deer, November 17, 2023 - The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens calmed the storm on Friday evening in the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre as they defeated the Concordia University Thunder in three straight sets.

Following a tough loss against The Kings University Eagles, the Queens came out with something to prove a week later against the Thunder. They jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set backed up by some great serving by outside-hitter Jaiden Ferguson (Business Administration) which led to a Thunder timeout. At 10-6, RDP and Concordia battled in quite the rally which featured multiple kill attempts and last-second digs to keep the ball alive. Outside-hitter Jolene Cook (Bachelor of Science) ended the rally with a kill. Despite the Thunder fighting back in the set, the Queens would take the first set 25-19.

It was a much closer set with the Thunder fighting to stay in the match as both teams were exchanging points one after another. But backed by some great defence from the Queens and tough serves from outside-hitter Emma Holmes (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) RDP jumped out to a 15-12 lead. The Queens would extend their lead following a 10-6 run and take the set 25-18.

The Queens cruised to a 25-15 victory in the third to take the match in three straight sets.

The players of the match were awarded to Thunders Emma Thompson (Bachelor of Science) and Queens Dani Wiens (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology). Thompson finished with five kills and 11 digs while Wiens finished with an outstanding 39 assists in the win.

The Queens will be back in action next week Friday as they head down to Lethbridge for two matches against the Kodiaks to finish off the first half of the season. The Thunder will have tomorrow off but next Friday they will host The Kings University Eagles for the first of two matches against each other.
