Briercrest Fights Off Feisty Huskies

By Jeff Misener

The Keyano Huskies, fresh off a five-set triumph over Medicine Hat, strolled into Caronport to square off against the Briercrest Clippers, who fell to Lakeland in a hotly contested match. Keyano brought plenty of compete to the hosts, but Briercrest prevailed 30-28, 25-16, 21-25, 25-20.

Briercrest applied early pressure on serve, with Rachel Stead provide the vital touches. Keyano brought an array of attack speeds to the action and demonstrated persistence on defense, while the Clippers struggled to settle into a useful rhythm. The teams exchanged points throughout the set, with an error at the net by the visitors closing the action.

The Briercrest outside hitters asked serious questions of the Keyano blockers in second frame, but the Huskies provided the necessary answers. Stead patrolled the middle with purpose and energized her squad through a rich vein of serving success. Inspired by Stead's play, Faith Buhler upped her game, and the home team pulled away with ease.

Keyano surged to a huge lead in the third as Hannah Shelemey handcuffed the Clippers on her serve. The Huskies also pressured Briercrest with forceful outside attacks from Shelemey and Megan Polant, tooling the Clipper block at every opportunity. Once again, Buhler rolled up her sleeves and pummeled the ball on both sides while Stead delivered the goods on serve. With the hosts threatening, Keyano dug deep to re-establish their advantage and steal the set.

With Polant firing darts on serve and Shelemey delivering bombs on the left side, the visitors grabbed a sizeable lead in the final stanza. The Clippers mounted a patient comeback and erased the deficit, relying on Summer Okerstrom's formidable net presence. Once they tied the game, Briercrest put their foot down, seized the psychological edge, and secured the victory.

Player of the Game for Briercrest was Brooklyn Buhler, who quietly but effectively notched six kills and three digs. Raisa Stokes starred for the Huskies with 15 digs to earn POG honours.
