Trojans secure weekend sweep over Broncos

In a match full of momentum swings, the SAIT Trojans held firm, defeating the Olds College Broncos in four sets (25-22, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23) at the Ralph Klein Centre on Saturday to sweep a weekend home-and-home between the two sides.

Sophia Fergson led the attack for SAIT (3-3) with 17 points (14 kills, two aces and a block), while LeeAnne Arnott added 16 points (14 kills, an ace and a block) and five digs, and Taryn Corkery added 14 points on 10 kills and four aces, with nine digs also mixed in.

For Olds College (0-5), Lexi Lafreniere led the way with 12 points (eight kills, two aces, two blocks) to go with 10 digs, while Kaycee Conan had eight points (six kills, an ace and a block) and four digs, and Julia Pedersen posted seven points (six kills and an ace) with eight digs; Broncos libero Dani Bryant led all players with 23 digs.

The Broncos got off to a hot start on home court in the first set, only for the Trojans to claw back and take the lead at 19-18 and build to the opening set win from there. The Broncos then withstood a SAIT comeback late in the second to bring the match level at a set apiece before the Trojans took over in the third, then eventually closed it out in a tightly-contested fourth set.

Next up, the Trojans head north to play The King's University Eagles, while the Broncos welcome the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder to Olds; both matches are on Friday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m.

Both matches will also be available live on ACACTV.ca, as well as on TELUS OptikTV channel 1998.
