Briercrest Sweeps SAIT in Saturday Volleyball Action

The Briercrest Clippers and SAIT Trojans rejoined their rivalry in the second of their weekend matches. Briercrest knocked SAIT out of playoff contention last season, and the Clippers' ladies rebounded from last night's defeat, defending their home court with a 25-16, 25-19, 30-28 triumph.

Clippers' middle Rachel Stead and SAIT outside hitter LeeAnne Arnott exchanged kills to open the proceedings. The teams traded sideouts as Clippers' Julia Beer and Faith Buhler traded blows with Arnott and Sophia Ferguson. Strong serving from Beer and potent attacks from her teammates gave Briercrest the first frame.

The hosts began the second set with solid team blocking and efficient offense. Briercrest setter Bailey Opseth handcuffed the SAIT team on her serve and distributed the ball effectively, with veterans Beer and Buhler as her favourite targets. The SAIT team struggled to discover and maintain any useful momentum, although Arnott and Ferguson enjoyed moments of success. When the chips were down, Beer showed her finishing quality. Brooklyn Buhler launched set three with a pair of aces and a backrow kill. Arnott and Ferguson duelled with Beer early as the teams traded points.

SAIT surged ahead thanks to Jadyn Bowles and Taryn Corkery, but a rapid response from Faith Buhler on serve and Stead in the middle equalized the set. Again, Beer's experience in the crucial moments of the set pushed the hosts to the win. Player of the Game for the Clippers was Faith Buhler, whose four aces, seven kills, and eleven digs paced the Briercrest effort. For the visiting SAIT Trojans, Sophia Ferguson tallied eight kills to earn POG recognition.
