EAGLES SOAR TO VICTORY BUT VOYAGEURS FIND POSITIVES IN LOSS

LAC LA BICHE – At first glance, it doesn't look very flattering: a 6-0 home loss to The King's University  Eagles on Sunday afternoon at the Bold Center Soccer Field. Delve a little deeper, however, and there are many positives for the Portage College Voyageurs.

Down 2-0 after nine minutes and down their starting goalkeeper after Lizzie McLeod was injured late in the first half, the Voyageurs kept the Eagles at bay and even generated a few scoring chances of their own. Towards the end of the game, the Voyageurs ran out of gas as the Eagles scored four goals in the last 20 minutes to fly away with the victory. Abigael Wegner led the way with a goal and two assists and was named TKU's Player of the Game, while Kahlan McDonald, Zoe Gerein, Demaris Hodges, Chasity Pete and Cameryn Hrycun also found the back of the net. Eema Jones played a strong game for Portage and took home Player of the Game honours for her squad.

"We've such a short bench and when we have a key player like our goaltender going down like that and we have to pull one of our stronger defensive players [Emma Bendera] and put them into the goaltender position, the system breaks down," said Assistant Coach Al Bertschi. "It's unfortunate."

Despite the setback, Bertschi wasn't wearing a frown at the end of the game. He noted that the Voyageurs have played much better in recent weeks, even if it doesn't always show on the scoreboard.

"They came together today," he said. "We had a lot of good practices in the last couple of weeks and we've finally got them working together. It's much, much better."
