HUSKIES ROAR TO CONVINCING VICTORY OVER SHORTHANDED VOYAGEURS

LAC LA BICHE – Their bark was bad enough – but their bite was worse. The Keyano Huskies rolled into town Friday night and rolled over the Portage College Voyageurs, besting their shorthanded ACAC compatriots 12-0 on a beautiful night at the Bold Center Soccer Field. Marissa Mestre was simply mestre-ful for the Huskies, notching five goals to claim Player of the Game for her team.

With the Voyageurs battling injuries (including to their usual starting goalkeeper Lizzie McLeod), and down a player after a red card early in the second half, the Huskies showed no mercy, building on a 5-0 half time lead by notching seven more goals before the game was 77 minutes old. Sarah Jones, the Voyageurs' Player of the Game, was in good spirits despite the lopsided score after the match. She noted that it was a challenge to take on such a strong Keyano squad with such a short bench.

"But we just need to keep our heads up," she said. "We did have our chances, like we were on their end quite a bit. It's just getting back and just putting on the pressure. I think, despite the score, we played our hardest with the circumstances we're in."

The Voyageurs will have little time to dwell on the game, as they travel to Edmonton on Saturday to take on The King's University Eagles. Jones knows her teammates will need to improve on a few things if they want to clip the Eagles' wings and keep their playoff hopes alive.

"I think we're gonna have to listen to one another, really listening to our keeper," she said. "We did leave her high and dry and to just keep looking for each other, move to the ball. There were times where we were just waiting and the other players would see that and swoop in. So there's a lot of things we can take from this game and work on. We still have four games left. It's not over yet."
