Broncos run wild on the Queens, score two late goals to win it

Red Deer, September 30, 2023 - The Olds College Broncos earned their second victory of the season as they came into Red Deer and walked away with a 2-0 win against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.

The Broncos would have a very early chance but with the pressure of Queens goalkeeper Abby Kotyk (Bachelor of Kinesiology), the Olds striker put it wide.

At the half, the match was deadlocked at zero with the lone shot of the game coming from midfield Jane Morris (Bachelor of Applied Science in Agribusiness).

Midfield Sofia Quinteros (Practical Nursing Diploma) was given a prime opportunity on a free kick but just placed it high and wide early on in the second half.

Queens Athlete of the Week, Quinn Daku (Open Studies) was sent a through ball down the line but could not beat Broncos goalkeeper Kaia Galuska (Vet Medical Receptionist) as she dove across the net to make the save.

The deadlock was finally broken after Broncos striker Tiona Paton (Bachelor of Applied Science in Agribusiness) was sprung on a breakaway from a through pass that she finished bottom corner to give her team the 1-0 lead late in the second half. Midfield Brynn Smith (Land and Water Resource) was given the assist on the goal.

Paton would score her second goal of the match two minutes after her first as she was sent on another breakaway from a pass from teammate Mirtalem Vriend (Vet Medical Receptionist).

At the final whistle, Paton's first goal of the game was the game-winner and she was named the player of the match for the Broncos. Queens Sofia Quinteros was given the honour for her team.

The Polytechnic will be on the road tomorrow as they look to get back in the win column as they head to Camrose to take on the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings.

Olds College will head to Calgary to take on the SAIT Trojans.

Both matches will start at 12 pm.
