Vikings hang on for road win in Olds

The University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings made an early goal stand up as they hold on to defeat the Olds College Broncos 1-0 at Richardson Pioneer Field on Sunday.

Marita Alexander had the goal for the Vikings (2-2-0) and earned Player of the Game honours along the way, while Sofia Ovcharenko made 18 saves to preserve the clean sheet.

For the Broncos (0-4-0), Kaia Galuska made two saves, while Shelbee Stebanuk was named Player of the Game.

Augustana found its marker in the fifth minute as Alexander took a pass from Elle Popiel and slotted it past Galuska in tight to give the Vikings the early cushion.

From there, Ovcharenko was nothing short of brilliant in goal, making a number of key saves and staying composed to keep the Vikings on top the rest of the way despite persistent pressure from the Broncos.

The Vikings will travel south to play the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Saturday at noon, while the Broncos head to Calgary to face off with the Ambrose University Lions on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.
