Trojans take down Broncos

The SAIT Trojans came back from an early deficit to extend their perfect start to the 2023 ACAC season, powering past the Olds College Broncos 8-1 in Olds College's home opener at Richardson Pioneer Field.

Rachelle O'Leary earned player of the game honours for SAIT (3-0-0) with a four-goal performance, Olivia DePasquale added a pair, while Meaghan Wiebe and Miriam Kabonesa rounded out the Trojans' scoring; Alecs Larios picked up the decision in goal.

Mirtalem Vriend scored the only goal for the Broncos (0-3-0), picking up player of the game honours in the process. Vriend's marker came in the fourth minute to send an early charge into the home crowd as the Broncos went up 1-0.

However, it wasn't long before the Trojans settled in, as O'Leary levelled the contest in the 19th minute before completing a first half hat-trick with goals in the 26th and 44th minute; both of DePasquale's goals came on the cusp on extra time to put SAIT up 5-1 through 45 minutes.

SAIT continued to pour it on early in the second half with goals from Wiebe (47') and O'Leary's fourth (53') before Kabonesa put a bow on the offensive output in the 78th minute.

Tomorrow, the Trojans return to Calgary to welcome the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens, while the Broncos will host the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings; both matches are slated for a noon kickoff.
