Schellenberg shuts the door, Kailey gets the 2OT winner for Trojans in game 1 victory.

The Lakeland College Apex Automation Rustlers and SAIT Trojans tangled in game one of their best-of-three ACAC semi-final series in Lloydminster on Friday, March 1st. The Rustlers entered the game as the #1 seed in the league while the Trojans came in as the #4 seed. The Trojans would get a goal in double overtime to defeat the Rustlers 3-2.

The Rustlers would take the first minor of the period as Hailey Carothers drew a minor for hooking at the 7:25 mark of the first period. The Trojans had a few shots but Rustlers goalie Mackenzie Dojahn was up to the task, stopping a couple of glorious chances, including a point-blank high-slot chance from Pyper Alexander. Ella Wingert would take a defensive zone body contact minor penalty at 12:22 of the first period, which her Rustlers teammates would kill off successfully. The Rustlers would get their turn on the power play as Elisa Erhardt would take a two-minute minor for hooking with 3:44 left in period one. Trojans goalie stopped a couple of chances from Hailey Carothers and Claudia Lammers in front to stave off the power play. The Rustlers would outshoot the Trojans 14-8 after the first period.

In the second period, SAIT would get on the scoreboard first with a breakaway goal from Mikayla Loewen on an unassisted goal as she capitalized on a Rustlers turnover deep in their zone. She would beat Dojahn's high blocker side to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. The Rustlers would have two power play opportunities in the last seven minutes of the period but were unsuccessful in beating Schellenberg. After two periods, the Rustlers would outshoot the Trojans by a shot total of 10-5 and 24-13 overall.

The third period was intense as the Rustlers looked to cut into the 1-0 SAIT lead. Early in the third period, Claudia Lammers would capitalize on a goalmouth scramble to tie the game at 1-1. Assist would go to Keyra Buziak at 18:47 of the third period. Five minutes later, Asha Petrie would score after Schellenberg made the initial save on a two-on-one for Petrie and Kaylee Hill to give the Rustlers the lead. The lead would last until 0.6 seconds left on the clock when Esther Boelema would score to tie the game at 2-2. Assists would go to Mikayla Loewen and Elisa Erhardt. Shots on goal for the third period were 13-6 Lakeland and 37-19 overall for regulation time.

Overtime did not settle anything although the Trojans did have a power play advantage as Madelyn Mann would take a tripping minor that the Rustlers would kill off the penalty. Shots on goal were 5-2 for Lakeland and after the first OT period were 42-21 for Lakeland. The second overtime period would be a back-and-forth affair. The Rustlers would have several opportunities hitting a crossbar and narrowly missing the top corner. The Trojans would end the game on a play in front of Dojahn. Asha Kailey would capitalize on a turnover and end the game, giving the Trojans a 3-2 victory. Final shots on goal were 44-24 with Asha Petrie getting the player of the game nod for the Rustlers and Kaylin Schellenberg getting the player of the game award for the Trojans.
