Rustlers Snatch Victory at Ooks Senior Night

Friday nights action saw the visiting Lakeland Rustlers take on the NAIT Ooks. While both teams have already secured playoff spots, they were both still battling for seeding. The Ooks also recognized six senior and graduating athletes. #7 Josie Nichols, #8 Tayler Premak, #9 Hailey Cruickshank, #16 Michaella Kibblewhite, #18 Bre Martin and #29 Kaitlyn Slator were all playing in their final home regular season game.

The first period saw the Ooks get an early powerplay and have a great scoring opportunity, but Rustlers keeper #31 Mackenzie Dojahn was able to make an amazing save to keep the Ooks off the scoreboard. After firing 11 shots on goal in the first 8-minutes, the Ooks were able to get one past the Rustler goalie. The goal was scored by #13 Hanna Paquette, with the assists coming from #2 Kamryn Aebly, and #4 Jessica Engelbrecht. The Ooks were able to keep the pressure on, finishing the period with 19 shots on goal.

The Ooks lead 1-0 after the first period.

The second period started off hot for the Rustlers as they were able to quickly tie the game up in the first minute. The goal was scored by #25 Keyra Buziak with the assist from #10 Brooklyn Salewski. The rest of first half of the period saw both teams trading shots, but both goalies were able to keep it a 1-1 game. The Rustlers were able to take the lead with a goal from #5 Hailey Carothers and assists from #19 Mykayla Pylypow and #27Darby Robertson. With less than 1-minute left in the period, the Ooks were able to tie it up thanks to #28 Halle Graham with assists from #18 Bre Martin and #27 Cassidy Shandro.

The game was tied 2-2 after the second period.

The third period saw both teams get powerplays in the first 10-minutes of the period. While neither team was able to score, both teams had picked up the intensity with playoff positioning on the line. The final 10-minutes saw both teams keep the pressure on, trying to score the go-ahead goal. The Rustlers were able to get the go-ahead goal with 1-minute left in the game. The goal was scored by #27 Darby Robertson. With 5-seconds to go, the Ooks were able to tie the game with a goal scored by #27 Cassidy Shandro, with the assists coming from #18 Bre Martin, #4 Jessica Engelbrecht.

The game was tied 3-3 after the third period.

Overtime started off with the Ooks getting a breakout from #18 Bre Martin, by the Rustlers keeper #31 Mackenzie Dojahn make an amazing save to keep the game going. The first overtime period, which was 4-on-4, saw neither team score, resulting in a second overtime period of 3-on-3 play. The second overtime saw both teams have great chances to score, but neither were able to get one past the goalies who were both outstanding all evening. With the action still tied after 10-minutes of overtime, the teams would head to a shootout.

In what turned into being a best of 4 shootout, the Rustlers came away with a 1-0 score, to win the game 4-3, securing them first place for the playoffs. The Rustlers #2 Claudia Lammers scored the game winning shoot out goal.
