Queens clip Broncos in Olds

A three-goal second period broke the game open for the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens, as they defeated the Olds College Broncos 6-0 at the Town of Olds Sportsplex on Thursday.

Jenna Sellen scored twice for the Queens (16-4-0), who moved to within two points of NAIT for top spot in the ACAC with the victory with a game in hand. Rylee Mepham, Alesha Santos and Kyla Hansel each had a goal and an assist, while Jailyn Bablitz also scored; Alli Soyko also chipped in with two assists.

Tora Ward made 21 saves to record the shutout for RDP, while Lacey Friesen turned aside 28 shots for the Broncos (4-15-1).

The Queens scored twice on the powerplay in the matchup, including the game's opening goal late in the first as Hansel's point shot found its way through traffic to beat Friesen with 4:36 left in the opening period.

Sellen doubled the Queens' lead early in the second period as she finished off a 3-on-1 off a cross-ice feed from Soyko. Santos added RDP's second powerplay goal with just over six minutes left in the frame on another point shot through traffic, with Mepham extending the lead to four just 1:02 later, finding a loose puck off a 2-on-1 attempt and beating Friesen. Sellen would find the back of the net again just over five minutes into the third, with Bablitz rounding out the scoring in the final minute of play.

The Queens host the SAIT Trojans on Feb. 9 at 7 p.m., while the Broncos hit the road for a weekend doubleheader with the Medicine Hat College Rattlers beginning this Saturday at 7:45 p.m.; both matchups will be available on ACACTV.ca, as well as on TELUS OptikTV channel 1998.
