Rustlers complete weekend sweep of Broncos in double OT

Hailey Carothers played the hero for the Lakeland College Rustlers, scoring with 1:55 remaining in the second overtime to defeat the Olds College Broncos 4-3 at the Town of Olds Sportsplex on Sunday.

The story of the matchup, however, was Broncos goaltender Lacey Friesen, who made 64 saves in her season debut to secure a point for Olds College (4-12-1).

Mackenzie Stafford scored twice, Brooklyn Salewski had a goal and an assist, and Ava Cole had two assists for the Rustlers (record), while Mackenzie Dojahn and Shaye Thompson combined to make 29 saves for Lakeland.

Sydney Jack had a goal and two assists to lead the Broncos offensively, while Jerika Pashniak and Paisley Arntsen each had a goal and an assist.

It was Pashniak who got the Broncos started midway through the first period, taking a pass from Arntsen out of the corner and firing a wrist shot over Thompson's shoulder to put Olds College up 1-0. With just over five minutes left in the frame, Arntsen struck on the powerplay to put the Broncos up 2-0 after one period, prompting the Rustlers to swap goaltenders. Dojahn would receive an immediate test as Brogan Carlson was awarded a penalty shot just 36 seconds into the second period, but Dojahn was up to the task with a blocker save.

The Rustlers pushed hard for the majority of the period as they outshot the Broncos 23-4 in the frame, with Stafford finally beating Friesen with three-tenths of a second left to cut the Broncos' lead in half after 40 minutes. Stafford pulled the Rustlers level early in the third, tucking home the rebound off a Kylie Perry shot 2:49 into the period to make it 2-2.

Jack would restore the Broncos' lead on the powerplay at 8:09 of the third, only for a Salewski shot to slip past Friesen 18 seconds later to once again bring the game level at 3-3, which held into overtime as Friesen did everything she could to give the Broncos a chance.

While the first overtime didn't solve anything, Carothers eventually found a loose puck to tuck past Friesen after a Darby Robertson centering attempt to send the Rustlers home with the extra point to overtake Red Deer Polytechnic for second in the ACAC.

The Rustlers have a bye week before hosting the SAIT Trojans on February 2 at 7 p.m., while the Broncos will head to Edmonton on Friday to begin a home-and-home with the NAIT Ooks at 7 p.m. Both matchups will be available on ACACTV.ca, as well as on TELUS OptikTV channel 1998.
