Rustlers rush past Broncos to begin doubleheader

The Lakeland College Rustlers came charging out of the gate and never let up, defeating the Olds College Broncos 8-0 at the Town of Olds Sportsplex on Saturday afternoon.

Janay Williams scored twice and added two assists for the Rustlers (12-3-1), while Belle Smith also scored twice. Kylie Perry notched a goal and three assists, Mackenzie Stafford posted a goal and two assists, and Keyra Buziak and Hailey Carothers rounded out the goal scoring, with Mackenzie Dojahn making 24 saves for the shutout.

On the other side, Cienna Kinghorn and Tiana Stafford combined to make 27 saves for the Broncos (4-12-0).

Buziak got the offensive outburst started on the powerplay just over halfway into the opening period, as her shot from the top of the circles found its way past Kinghorn to put the Rustlers up one. Perry found the back of the net to double the lead a few minutes later, with a Carothers shorthanded breakaway goal punctuating a 3-0 Rustlers lead through 20 minutes.

Mackenzie Stafford further extended the Lakeland lead early in the second, with Smith and Williams then scoring twice in nine seconds to push the lead to 6-0 and prompt a goaltending change. Smith would add another with 20 seconds left in the second to put Lakeland up 7-0, with Williams adding her second of the game late in the third.

The Rustlers and Broncos will face off again tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Town of Olds Sportsplex. The game can be watched live at ACACTV.ca, or on TELUS OptikTV channel 1998.
