Trojans hold on for road win in Olds

Kaylin Schellenberg stole the show with 45 saves to lift the SAIT Trojans a 2-1 win over the Olds College Broncos at the Town of Olds Sportsplex on Thursday.

Isabella Hayward and captain Esther Boelema scored for the Trojans (5-7-0), who have now won three of their last four contests.

Maeve Van't Klooster replied for the Broncos (2-9-0), while Cienna Kinghorn made 18 saves in goal.

Olds College peppered the Trojans with opportunities in the first as they outshot the Trojans 16-3, but Schellenberg stood tall the entire way to maintain a scoreless tie heading into the first intermission.

SAIT would open the scoring just under seven minutes into the second after Sydney Hollman corraled a loose puck in the corner and fed Hayward at the point, with her slap shot finding its way past Kinghorn to put the Trojans up 1-0 through 40 minutes despite the Broncos holding a 34-15 advantage in shots on goal.

The Broncos broke through off an offensive zone faceoff as Klara Mattey tapped the puck past to Keera Tiringer. Schellenberg stopped the initial slap shot, but Van't Klooster found the rebound at the top of the crease to put the Broncos back on level footing with 4:57 remaining. However, the deadlock only lasted 22 seconds as the Trojans immediately went on the attack, with Boelema finding space in the slot to fire a wrist shot over Kinghorn's shoulder for what proved to be the game-winning goal, as the Broncos couldn't send it to overtime despite a late push with an extra skater.

The Trojans will play their final home game before Christmas on Nov. 25 against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers at 4:45 p.m., while the Broncos head up Highway 2 to play the NAIT Ooks tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
