An All Western Affair with Rustlers vs Broncos

Lloydminster, AB - The Lakeland College Apex Automation Rustlers and Olds College Broncos tangled in a Friday night affair at the Russ Robertson Arena tonight in Lloydminster. The Rustlers hosted their annual Cowboy Hats & Cowbells Evening with the Broncos in town and skated to a 5-2 victory to send the hometown fans home happy.

The Rustlers would come out the gate aggressive and flying, outshooting the Broncos 25-7 in the first period. Some massive saves by goalie Cienna Kinghorn kept things tight for her Broncos teammates. Claudia Lammers was awarded a penalty shot early in the first period but was stoned by the glove hand of Kinghorn. The Broncos would beat Rustlers goalie at the 4:16 into period number one. Avery Kendall would open the scoring, beating Neufeld to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. The Broncos would get into some penalty trouble in the first, taking two minor penalties. The Rustlers would finally solve Kinghorn as forward Kaylee Hill would beat Kinghorn to the blocker side, squaring things at 1-1.

The second period would see each side take two minor penalties but neither team would take advantage on their respective power plays. The Rustlers would outshoot the Broncos 18-5 and dictate the play in period two. Kinghorn proved to be the difference once again, thwarting many shot attempts in close from Lakeland. The third period would see the Rustlers take an early penalty and defenceman Keyra Buziak would display some excellent stick handling abilities to beat Kinghorn shorthanded. The Rustlers would add to their lead two minutes later. Hailey Carothers would score with the lone assist going to Austyn Eaton. The Rustlers would open up a 3-1 advantage at this point. One minute later, with the Broncos taking a minor penalty, the Rustlers would cash in on the power play as Claudia Lammers would bury the puck on a great solo effort. Mackenzie Stafford would draw the assist to give the Rustlers a 4-1 lead. The Rustlers would add another goal two minutes later as Olivia Mann scored from the high slot, assists going to Calla Kampen and Darby Robertson. The Broncos would wrap up the scoring in the evening with Kaitlyn Sandul scoring to close things out at 5-2 for the Rustlers. Lakeland would hold a 15-10 shot advantage in the third period.

Players of the game went to Cienna Kinghorn for the Broncos and Claudia Lammers for the Rustlers.

The two teams will square off again with a Saturday afternoon matinee at the Russ Robertson Arena. Puck drop is 2:00pm.
