Broncos pick up first win of season over Medicine Hat

A four-goal outburst in the first period was more than enough offense for the Olds College Broncos, as they defeated the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 6-1 at the Town of Olds Sportsplex on Saturday.

Broncos player of the game Keera Tiringer led the way with a hat trick and an assist, while Paisley Arntsen, Jerika Pashniak, and Sydney Jack also scored for Olds College (1-2-0). Tiana Stafford was solid in goal for the Broncos, turning aside 18 of 19 Medicine Hat shots for her first ACAC victory.

For the Rattlers (0-3-0), player of the game Brynn Kuntz had the lone goal, while Kinlee Fahselt was busy in net as she made 35 saves.

The Broncos got the ball rolling less than five minutes in, as a Teagan Walker hustle play to negate an icing led to Tessa Knisely finding Tiringer at the point, and her shot tipped off a stick and past Fahselt to put Olds College up 1-0 4:18 in. Tiringer would double her output less than three minutes later, fishing a puck out of the corner and finding a rebound in the Medicine Hat crease to put the Broncos up 2-0.

Arntsen then got on the board on the powerplay midway through the frame, taking a pass from Brogan Carlson at the Rattlers blue line and wristing a shot past Fahselt for her first ACAC goal to extend the Broncos' lead to three before Pashniak wrapped up the first period offensive, banging home a rebound off an Ireland Greenhough shot to put the Broncos up 4-0 through 20 minutes.

Jack didn't waste any time extending the Olds College lead in the second period, rushing through the neutral zone and beating Fahselt over the glove to put the Broncos up 5-0 before Tiringer completed her hat trick late in the frame, rushing up the ice and finding the short side to complete the Olds College scoring.

The Rattlers spoiled the Broncos' shutout bid midway through the third as Kuntz skated the puck up the right wing and beat Stafford from the hash marks for the Rattlers' first goal since joining the ACAC officially this season.

The two sides will square off again tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Town of Olds Sportsplex; the game will also be available to view on ACACTV.ca, or on TELUS OptikTV channel 1998.
