Rustlers rush past Broncos in Olds

Olds, AB - The Lakeland College Rustlers earned a weekend split on the road, defeating the Olds College Broncos 3-1 at the Town of Olds Sportsplex on Sunday.

Keyra Buziak, Kaylee Hill and player of the game Kylie Perry all scored for Lakeland (1-1-0), while Janae Neufeld made 16 saves for the win.

Cienna Kinghorn was busy in goal for the Broncos (0-2-0) with 34 saves, while player of the game Jerika Pashniak supplied the lone goal for Olds College.

Lakeland took advantage of a power play just over five minutes in, as Buziak walked in to the top of the faceoff circle and beat Kinghorn to the glove side to put the Rustlers up 1-0, which stood through the first intermission.

The Broncos would find an equalizer late in the second period off a good offensive sequence that began with Sydney Jack keeping the puck in at the blue line, then Ireland Greenhough dished off to Pashniak, who beat Neufeld five-hole to make it 1-1 through 40 minutes.

However, the Rustlers asserted themselves in the third, going ahead after Belle Smith rushed through the neutral zone to feed Perry, whose spinning wrist shot beat Kinghorn to put Lakeland up for good, with Hill icing it with 5:13 remaining on a failed Broncos clearing attempt.

Next up, Lakeland hosts its home opener against Red Deer Polytechnic on Friday, October 13 at 7 p.m., while the Broncos will welcome the expansion Medicine Hat College Rattlers to Olds for the first time for a weekend doubleheader beginning on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.
