RDP Queens top Women's Basketball Huskies in regular season finale

Fort McMurray, Alta. (February 17, 2024) - RDP Queens 68 Keyano Huskies 64

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens used a strong third quarter to fend off a fourth quarter comeback attempt, defeating the host Keyano Huskies Women's Basketball team 68-64 in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre Saturday night.

Peighton Melton led all players on the court with 20 points while a 17-point effort from Sandra Garcia-Bernal also aided in the victory. The Queens shot 41.9% (26-for-62) from the field on the day, making four three-point shots. They made 12 free throws on 20 attempts.

It was the host Huskies taking an early lead by a 21-20 margin after one quarter, but the Queens fought back to lead 35-34 at the half. Energized for the third quarter, the Queens rolled to a 20-6 advantage in the opening quarter of the second half. That 15-point advantage was just enough to fend off a 24-15 run by the Huskies in the final quarter.

Kaylynn Tucker's 13 points led the Huskies on the night, with 12-point performances by Casey Gorieu and Emma Tomchuk not far behind. Lameez Khan had 10 points to lead all players off the bench.

The Huskies shot 38.8% (19-for-49) from the field, including seven three-point shots. They made 19 of 25 attempted free throws.

The win secured second place in the ACAC South Division for the Queens and fifth place in the ACAC North Division for the Huskies.
