Clippers Celebrate Season-Ending Win Over Wolves

By Jeff Misener

In their final home game before ACAC playoffs, the Briercrest Clippers (12-8) hosted the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves (1-18) in women's basketball action. Fresh off a strong performance the night before, the Clippers were firing on all cylinders in an 88-48 triumph.

Off the opening tip, Clippers' Dori Sunderland and Wolves' Abby Crown traded clean threes. After NWP's Raylene Badger muscled inside for two, Briercrest's Madison Beattie converted a three point play. Following a layup by Wolves' Abigail Kramps, Amber Fichtner gathered her own miss to score. Defensive lapses by the Clippers yielded easy hoops by Paige Snyder and Makayla Porteous and a three from Gracie Reschke before Beattie hit a bank shot at the buzzer.

Beattie nailed a three to start the second frame, but Crown had an answer inside. The Clippers' forwards asserted themselves inside, with Hope Jordens and Brooklyn Martens driving boldly to the paint. Clippers' Eve Duerksen and Kramps hit from distance. With all the parts of her game in full bloom, Sunderland skippered her squad to a sizeable lead at the half.

Opening the second half, Snyder and Martens charged into the paint for scores. Ellis and Sunderland served up Beattie for triples from the elbow before Martens shredded the Wolves' defense on successive drives. The Briercrest subs saw considerable action in the third and played with energy and confidence, with Claire Daubenfeld and Fichtner shining on offense.

The Clippers' bench played the lion's share of the last quarter. Porteous delivered a pair of triples for the Wolves but the home team was too strong in all aspects of the game. Kendall Evans' free throws ensured every member of the Clippers got into the scoring column.

Player of the Game for the NWP was Abigail Kramps who collected four points, two boards and one assist; Makayla Porteous led the visitors with 15 points and Abby Crown added nine. The POG honour for Briercrest went to Hope Jordens, who marked her 100th game as a Clipper with 10 points and five rebounds. Brooklyn Martens was one of six Clippers in double figures with 15 points and Dori Sunderland had 14 points and six dimes.
