STMU defeats SAIT

Calgary, AB - Saturday, Jan. 20: St. Mary's University Lightning 89 at SAIT Trojans 88

The SAIT Trojans women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker in double overtime to the St. Mary's University Lightning on Saturday. Tight until the very end, a last-second layup from St. Mary's handed SAIT their ninth loss of the season, pushing them to 5-9. With the victory, the Lightning now sit at 10-5.

It couldn't have been much closer, with St. Mary's erasing a deficit late in the fourth, and then SAIT tying the game in the final seconds of the quarter to force overtime. After five extra minutes solved nothing, the final frame saw the Lightning win in the final moments, after a steal and score with no time on the clock.

Brook Baker finished with 27 points, 13 rebounds and five assists for the Trojans before fouling out late in the fourth. Anegor Wol stepped up with 20 points of her own along with nine rebounds and six assists. Megan Stagoll came close to a triple-double, dropping 12 points, nine boards and a team-high 7 assists.

Both teams had trouble scoring early, as the score at the half was just 35-34 Trojans.

The Lightning wiped out a five-point deficit in the final quarter thanks to Andria Stitt and Makayla Rose who each scored eight points in the frame.

Anegor Wol scored the game-tying layup with three seconds left in the fourth to force overtime, where Jazmyn Kellogg tied the game for the Lightning, again with under 20 seconds left.

A last-second steal and layup by Andria Stitt gave St. Mary's the 89-88 win.

The Trojans will head to Medicine Hat to face the 2-12 Rattlers on Thursday night.

The Lightning will face Red Deer Polytechnic on Friday.
