Beattie Stars as Clippers Defeat Vikings

By Jeff Misener

The University of Alberta–Augustana (UAA) Vikings women's basketball team roamed into Caronport, SK, to tip off against the Briercrest Clippers in a cross- division affair. Madison Beattie knocked down an array of threes to lead Briercrest to a 69-57 win.

Clippers' forward Brooklyn Martens enjoyed a strong start on offense while her teammates locked down the Vikings on defense. Both teams endured cold shooting for much of the opening quarter until Briercrest's Dori Sunderland connected on a long three.

A triple from Vikings' Elli Cailliau injected fresh energy into the Augustana attack, with Alyssa Banez and Mackenzie Mrazik chipping in. Unfazed, Sunderland sliced through the key for a deuce and teammate Madison Beattie nailed a trifecta of threes. A steal and score from Clippers' defensive whiz Melissa Ellis increased the home team's advantage.

Cailliau and Ellis traded long range bombs to open the second half. The Vikings' forwards found joy in the paint, but Sunderland put an end to their surge with consecutive drives to the hoop. Yeoman work on the offensive end by Asia Wells boosted the Clippers' lead, but UAA's Sabine Gross provided the counter for the visitors.

The Vikings, led by Banez, probed for cracks in the Clippers' defense, but the hosts showed their mettle as Wells whirled to the rim for scores and Beattie hit triples. Augustana's offense dried up despite many good opportunities. Meanwhile, the Clippers executed their sets with patience and precision to secure the victory.

Player of the Game for UAA was Sabine Gross, who tallied 10 points, seven rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Madison Beattie notched 19 points, three assists, two boards and a steal to earn the award for Briercrest.
