Broncos hang on to tackle Trojans in home opener

The Olds College Broncos had to scratch and claw, but they got the job done in defeating the SAIT Trojans 62-58 in their home opener at the Ralph Klein Centre on Friday.

Meghan Swartz paced the scoring output for the Broncos (1-2) with 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Sway McMane knocked down four three-pointers for her 12 points to go with six assists, and Nicole Farkas chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds. The Broncos also won the battles on the glass, outrebounding the Trojans 36-23.

For SAIT (0-3), Brook Baker led all scorers with 31 points to go with 10 rebounds for a double-double, with an additional three steals. Supporting offence came from Anegor Wol and Macy Mulholland, who had seven points apiece.

SAIT had control early in the matchup, using a 10-1 run to go up 12-4 with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter, only for the Broncos to chip away at the deficit to reduce the Trojans lead to 17-13 through the opening 10 minutes.

The second quarter was evenly matched from start to finish, though the Broncos kept chipping away and eventually took a 30-29 lead into halftime. Olds College continued the momentum from the comeback into the third quarter as they sparked a 10-0 run to go up 40-33, only for SAIT to claw back themselves to send the game to the fourth quarter at a 40-39 Broncos lead.

SAIT continued the offensive output, completing a 16-2 run spanning the third and fourth to go up 49-42, only for the Broncos to fight back once more to tie it at 52-52 on a McMane three-pointer midway through the frame. From there, it was a tightly contested matchup until the Broncos got separation in the final two minutes, with rookie Bree Hagen making a big jump shot to put the Broncos up 62-56 with less than a minute to play.

From here, the Broncos welcome the Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves to Olds on November 4 at 1 p.m., while SAIT will host The King's University Eagles on November 3 at 6 p.m.

Both games will be available on ACACTV.ca, as well as on TELUS OptikTV channel 1998.
