Women's Basketball Huskies fight back in fourth quarter for weekend split

Fort McMurray, Alta. (October 21, 2023) - Augustana Vikings 41 Keyano Huskies 45

The Keyano Huskies Women's Basketball team won a defensive battle Saturday afternoon, emerging with a 45-41 win against the University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings and a weekend split from the pair of games. 

Maja Besic scored forty percent of her team's points with 18 to lead all players on the court. Teammate Kaylynn Tucker was close behind with 15 of her own. The Vikings countered with a 13-point effort from Tayah Fiveland and 11 points from Mackenzie Mrazik. 

After going up in the first quarter of Friday's loss, the Huskies put themselves in a 16-4 hole after the first quarter and slowly chipped away. They cut the 12-point deficit to nine at the half and eight by the end of the third quarter. That set the stage for the Huskies to have the last laugh, outscoring their opponents 20-8 in the final 10 minutes to come from behind and secure the win. 

Overall, the Huskies went 18-for-61 from the field (29.5%), making two three-point shots in the contest. They also made good on seven of their 12 attempts at the free throw line. The Viking went 13-for-52 from the field (25.0%), also making a pair of three-point shots. The visitors made 13 of their 16 free-throw attempts. 

Up next for the Huskies is their first regular season road trip to Edmonton, which will see them clash with the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder for a pair of matches.
