Dominant Defense Key to Briercrest Romp

By Jeff Misener

The Briercrest Clippers and Olds Broncos renewed rivalries in a Saturday afternoon contest in ACAC women's basketball. Briercrest unleashed a furious effort on defensive in collecting a 93-40 win.

Briercrest's Madison Beattie opened the game with a baseline three and an assist on Dori Sunderland's inside hoop. Nicole Farkas notched the first points for Olds, but Clippers' forward Brooklyn Martens responded with scores at the rim. Sunderland and Beattie traded triples with Sway McMane and Haylee-Jo Heggie. While Briercrest scored on a number of sublime sets, Olds struggled to find a consistent finishing touch.

Both teams crafted useful chances in the second frame, but stiff defense and cold shooting dominated play. After a prolonged stretch of offensive silence, Olds' Farkas and Caitlin Paul swapped layups with Martens, Beattie, and Amber Fichtner. Just before halftime, Briercrest's Melissa Ellis gobbled up two Olds turnovers and cashed them into points.

Olds opened the second half with an aggressive run, capped by Farkas' elbow three, but Eve Duerksen and Martens answered for the hosts. The fans roared their approval as Ellis nutmegged a defender for a pretty assist and then vetoed an Olds' layup attempt. Briercrest unleashed a fresh defensive commitment to clamp down on the Broncos' shooters, while demonstrating an unselfishness on the offensive end as they vaulted into a commanding lead.

Paul and Ellis splashed threes to begin the final stanza, and Farkas flashed some moves in the post that would have made Shaq smile, but the Clippers' suffocating defense quashed any hope for Olds to stage a comeback and the Clippers won with ease.

Brooklyn Martens scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to earn Player of the Game honours for Briercrest. Amber Fichtner supported her with a double double (11 points, 14 boards) and Melissa Ellis chipped in 12 points. Olds Broncos' Caitlin Paul received the POG nod thanks to her 11 points and five steals, while teammates Bree Hagen and Haylee-Jo Heggie contributed seven points and 10 rebounds, respectively.
