Kodiaks Earn Split Against Clippers

On the heels of Friday's thrilling match, Lethbridge and Briercrest took to the court to battle it out in an ACAC South Division tilt.

Early offense was scarce for both teams as they committed themselves to lockdown defense all over the court. Lethbridge's Tylee Leavitt hit the first three of the game, and her teammate Catriona Smith made a three-point play to put the visitors up 9-2. Clippers' Melissa Ellis and Amber Fichtner responded with layups for the hosts, and the quarter closed with a 13-7 edge for the Kodiaks.

Briercrest began to find offensive chemistry right away in quarter two as Dori Sunderland and Fichtner willed the Clippers to a 16-15 lead. Leavitt responded with a three, and Kodiaks' Kitawna Sparks proved troublesome on offense as the Lethbridge lead climbed to nine. The Kodiaks' offensive dried up when Sparks went to the bench, allowing Fichtner and Brooklyn Martens to muscle their way to the basket for scores. At the half, it was a one score contest.

Sparks picked up two quick fouls after the halftime break and headed to the bench, and Clippers' Maddison Beattie responded with hot outside shooting to give the hosts a four-point lead. Although both teams had many chances to score, most of the offense in the last half of the quarter was from the stripe. With a minute remaining, Leavitt hit another three and Sparks found her way to the hoop, and Lethbridge surged to a 47-42 lead.

Leavitt hit her fifth triple of the game early in the final frame, but Clippers' Eve Duerksen replied with a pair of long-distance bombs to slice into the Kodiaks' lead. After Sparks fouled out, teammate Annah Westrop picked up the slack and provided timely rebounding and scoring. Down the stretch, Lethbridge increased their advantage from the charity stripe, and guard Montana Berezay swished an NBA three to close out a 71-56 victory for Lethbridge.

Player of the Game for Lethbridge was Tylee Leavitt, who stuffed the stat sheet with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 6 steals. For Briercrest, Eve Duerksen contributed six points and three rebounds to earn the award. Kitawna Sparks (19 points, 9 boards) and Annah Westrop (8 points, 14 rebounds) also featured for the visitors, while Amber Fichtner (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Brooklyn Martens (12 points, 13 boards) contributed to the Clipper cause.
