Lions stymie Broncos in overtime

The Ambrose University Lions locked down late, scoring 11 unanswered points in overtime to defeat the Olds College Broncos 78-67 in the Broncos' home opener at Ralph Klein Centre on Friday.

Kamsiyochi Ogbudibe paced the Lions (2-1) with 22 points, 14 rebounds and four assists, while Andrijana Bokan earned Player of the Game honours with 19 points and 14 rebounds coming off the bench.

For the Broncos (0-3), Makayla Rose led the charge with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Odett Schlegl also posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to secure Player of the Game recognition.

The matchup was tightly contested throughout, with the Broncos getting a marginal lead early before Ambrose responded with an 8-0 run to take a 22-18 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw more of the same as the Broncos and Lions went back and forth, with a Bokan buzzer beater squaring the game at 38-38 heading into halftime.

The third quarter produced a similar flow, with Ambrose gradually pushing out a 56-51 lead to end the quarter before growing it to 60-53 early in the fourth. However, the Broncos wouldn't go away as Rose helped push them back ahead late, though Ambrose went up 67-65 with 6.2 seconds to go. The ensuing inbound play saw Caitlin Paul make a buzzer beater after grabbing an offensive rebound to send the game to the extra session.

However, the Lions would take over from there, holding the Broncos scoreless in overtime.

The Lions and Broncos will complete the back end of their weekend doubleheader in Calgary tomorrow at 6 p.m.
