WBB | The Kodiaks Fall to the Defending National Champions

Feb. 15, 2020 – The Lethbridge College Kodiaks hosted the defending CCAA champions Olds Broncos on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Val Matteotti gym.

The Broncos looked to bounce back after their comeback attempt fell short in the first game of the weekend. The Kodiaks looked to keep momentum going into their second match-up against Olds. The Broncos were off to a rough going on the offensive end as shots did not fall. The points they did get from the first quarter came from Michaela Allen-Guillon and Brittney Thibeaux with three minutes remaining.  

The Kodiaks picked up the pace as they came out firing from the three-point perimeter, the team contributed 3/5 of their shots. The Kodiaks kept a two-point lead. Matliun McMurray drained a three pointer to give the Kodiaks their biggest lead of the game. It was Brook Baker from Olds who capitalized her three-point attempt to end the quarter. The score at the end of the first quarter was 18-16 for the Kodiaks.

The second quarter started with a three-point swish from Baker to give Olds their first lead of the game. Tensions were high as Olds felt like they were not getting calls in their attacking end. This led to complaints by Brittney Thibeaux which saw her receive a technical foul. Olds Coach Avery Harrison called a timeout to regroup his team.

Olds came out determined as they went on a 5-0 run of their own. Lethbridge was forced to call a timeout. The game consisted of both teams going basket for basket, it was Brittney Thibeaux of Olds who scored five straight points to keep the lead for her team. The score at the end of the first half was 29-27 for the Broncos.

The Broncos started the third quarter looking to take the game. Olds contributed two three-point swishes from Allen-Guillon to extend their lead to eight points. Natalie Hoyt of Lethbridge answered back with a three of her own.  The Broncos extended their lead throughout the quarter with big buckets from Alice-Fay Pitts and Brittney Thibeaux. The Olds took a 45-34 lead that forced a Lethbridge timeout. The period would end 47-39 for the Broncos.

The Kodiaks did not go away in the last quarter as they came out determined in the offensive end. Emily Greeno and Kistern Barwegen contributed a couple of baskets each to get their team back into it. The Broncos led the game 53-47 with five minutes remaining. Both teams were determined get the win as the game remained back and forth. Michaela Allen-Guillon put the game away for the Broncos as she drained a three pointer to give her team a 61-51 lead.

The Olds Broncos tied the weekend series against the Kodiaks with a 63-54 win. Emily Greeno finished with 13 points; McMurray had a good game on the boards with 17 rebounds. Brittney Thibeaux of the Olds finished with 22 points and 19 rebounds.

The Lethbridge Kodiaks will look to bounce back and secure a playoff spot as they visit the Briercrest Clippers in a two-match series to finish the regular season.
