Queens and Kodiaks claim team banners, while Stewart picks up five gold medals

EDMONTON - With eight races on the schedule for Day 2 of the 2024 ACAC Indoor Track Championships, presented by the Running Room, the RDP Queens women's team and the Lethbridge Kodiaks men's team each hoisted their respective trophies for the second consecutive year Sunday afternoon at the University of Alberta Universiade Pavilion. 

Getting a medal in all eight women's races over the weekend, the Queens found themselves well at the top of the women's rankings with 95 points, while the Kodiaks placed second with 49.50 points and the St. Mary's Lighting picked up third place with 45 points.

On the men's side, the Kodiaks broke four records to succeed in their hunt for the banner with an impressive 101 points. The SAIT Trojans took second with 83 points, while the RDP Kings rounded out the standings with 63 points.

In a race not for the faint of heart, Cadence Laplante picked up the first medal of the day in the women's 600m with a time of 1:42.79. Following closely behind, Loami Rautenbach from the Queens got silver, while Sidney Cusack from the UofA - Augustana Vikings crossed the line for bronze.

Picking up one of his five gold medals, Owen Stewart took the gold in the men's 600m, setting a new ACAC Championship record in the race. He would later follow his performance up with a gold in the men's 1500m.

After individual silver and bronze medals on Day 1, Justine Larson from the Queens would get her first gold medal of the weekend with a time of 5:18.41 in the women's 1500m. Madison Scrimger would get her third individual medal of the week with a silver, while Vikings Chloe Funnell rounded out the podium with a bronze medal.

In a championship first, a pair of Trojans made history by earning the first gold medals in the 60m race as fellow Faithfulness Oyekan earned the women's with a time of 8.27 seconds while David Adesegun crossed the finish line in first for the men with a time of 7.04 seconds.

In the final discipline of the day, the Queens put their final points on the board taking the gold medal in the women's 4x400m relay more than 10 seconds ahead of the rest of the field with a time of 4:19.65. They would be followed by the Kodiaks in second (4:29.70) and the Vikings in third (4:32.97).

The men's 4x400m relay would cap off the championships as the Kodiaks set their fourth and final record of the weekend with a time of 3:30.93, breaking the previous record held since 2018 by the Trojans. The RDP Kings took the silver medal with a time of 3:41.82 and the Trojans crossed the line in third place with a time of 3:41.97.
