Travaglini Honoured as 2017-18 ACAC Overall Male Athlete of the Year

Edmonton, AB (April 10, 2018) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Matthew Travaglini from the SAIT Trojans has been selected as the 2017-18 ACAC Male Athlete of the Year.

The cross-country and indoor track runner won every single race he entered this season — capturing both an ACAC and a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) title in cross-country running in the fall semester, and winning gold medals in the 1,000, 1,500 and 3,000-metre events at the ACAC's Indoor Track Championships in the winter semester. His accomplishments led the Trojan men to their second-straight team titles in each sport, and their first-ever CCAA cross-country running medal (bronze).

"Matthew is a very special athlete who put together a very special athletic season," says Wade Kolmel, SAIT Director of Athletics and Recreation. "While it is his collection of gold medals that will be talked about most, his strong work ethic and selfless desire to see his teammates succeed as well truly sets him apart. We are very proud of all his accomplishments and congratulate him on this award."

Travaglini becomes the first Trojan student-athlete to capture the prestigious award since both Mike Ullrich (men's hockey) and Kim Lee (women's basketball) both earned it in the 2009-10 season.

The third-year runner from London, Ont., is in the post-secondary's Bachelor of Applied Technology – Geographic Information Systems program.
