Rustlers sweep Trojans for 13th win

Lakeland men's volleyball secured their best regular season finish in program history, thanks to back-to-back 3-0 victories.

The Rustlers came into Saturday night's regular season finale with a chance still remaining at second place in the North Division. SAIT came into the match with just three wins in their previous 18 matches. Lakeland did make one adjustment to the lineup, with Tristan Hiemstra getting his first start at the setting position.

In the first two sets, the Rustlers played to expectation, winning 25-18, 25-19. Serving was a particularly big difference in the match, with the home side outpacing the visitors 8-0.

However, the third set quickly became intersting, with each team taking a turn on service runs. Lakeland eventually had four match points, but the Trojans were able to sruvive, forcing extra time. After several exciting sideouts, a Brock Tomyn ace sealed the 30-28 win.

Jake Willick, who played in his final home match, won POG off of 9 digs and excellent reception. Cole Mcdonald had 6 kills for the Trojans as their POG.

The Rustlers finish the season 13-6, with a week to wait and see if the NAIT Ooks win their final match and move back ahead for second place in the North. They will compete at the ACAC Conference Championship in Olds on Feb. 22.
